I am a veteran War gamer (as some say), I love rules and ideas today we are blessed with so many great War game rules with fantastic ideas and inventive creations. As Im old i want more simple more ease of game play , I do have my favorites but I recently saw these on the net Basic Battles 2.0 by Matthew T. Nowachek a free PDF of games designed to introduce kids to the war game world, The system is easy and direct, it does look very simple but oit makes you think and the options you can take to your games is easy. I play tested and found them what I like most in a War game get the miniatures to lay terrain and sort some points and off you go.
I decided to try some of my modern collection and a new set of Triffids from check point miniatures, simple lay out some buildings and worked out the hits for each miniature as in the rules , the Triffids I gave 4 hits each and the humans I decided on different points for the characters Hopper and leven with friends would face the man eating plants Hoppers shot gun I decided had a 12" range and Leven could wreak havoc at 12" also the Triffids had a whip range attack at 6".
The game is 2 miniatures actives and the the opposing side the activates 2 till both sides are done, the sides moved to engage each other Hoppers shot gun hoped to stop them at range, the two sides closed and hand to hand followed, the combat is easy a D 20 both sides highest roll scores 1 hit If you charge you get 2 D 20 which can be good a natural 20 on the dice makes 2 hits.
The Triffids got close but the Humans started to take them down one girl was struck down but 3 Triffids fell in the melee, Leven pounded a Triffid then charges and finished it off, while hopper shot gun in the end dropped the last Triffid,.
Great fun and a satisfying game, I like these rules very much for a fast skirmish, if interested please down load the PDF and have a go?
